What’s a Designer Dog?

Designer dogs are a mix of two different purebred dog breeds. The media gave them the label, designer dogs, as their popularity began to rise. They differ from mutts since they are deliberately bred between two breeds to create a hybrid breed. Mutts on the other hand, can be made up of a number of different breeds and their ancestry is often unknown. These hybrid breeds are often bred to achieve desirable traits. For example, Poodles are a popular pick for crossbreeding for their hypoallergenic qualities. There are hundreds of dog breed combinations, but here are some common ones you may run into around the neighborhood.

Chiweenie

Chiweenie

The Chiweenie is a mix between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund. The Dachshund side of this breed can make these dogs difficult to train as they can be very stubborn so make sure to have a lot of patience and a good carpet cleaner.

Labradoodle

Labradoodle

The Labradoodle is a combination of the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. With this hybrid breed, you can experience all the joys of a Lab, but without the shedding.

Goldendoodle

Goldendoodle

Similiar to the Labradoodle, the Goldendoodle is mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle.

Cockapoo

cockapoo

The cockapoo is the lap dog of the poodle mixes and is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle.

Puggle

puggle

The Puggle is the combination of a Pug and a Beagle. Their Beagle side can cause them to become overly distracted by a scent so make sure to have them on a leash when going on walks.
